Sweet Are the Uses of Adversity

As You Like It - Forest of Arden

Big News for 2021 - 2022

Since 2019, Jupiter Theater Company has operated akin to a community theater that only gathered for each play project. However, throughout that time, there was always the intention to develop the company into a constant theatrical presence in the Northern Virginia area for students, families, and school-groups. The theater world used the paused during COVID-19 to have innumerable discussions about ways to improve the industry, and so did we.

Seasons: JTC will perform three plays a year, beginning in the early fall and concluding in the late spring/early summer of the following year. Our year follows the following pattern:

  • Fall Season: Ren Shows

    • Exclusively for our more experienced actors, these plays replicate early modern theatrical rehearsal conditions and challenge the actors to memorize, rehearse, and perform a play within a short time number of rehearsals and without the guidance of a director.

  • Winter Season: Mid-scale Shows

    • These shows range from 7-18 actors

  • Spring Season: Large Scale Shows

    • The largest of our shows, the spring season features casts of 20+ actors and some of our most impressive spectacle

We are constantly looking for new cast and crew members to join our troupe, so reach out to us if you are interested in joining the team!

Partnerships: This spring, we began partnering with school groups to teach workshops at related to our plays. Additionally, we look to connect with other theater groups and churches as expand our theatrical repertoire and explore other classic stories in antiquity, modern, and the Bible.

  • Classes: Beginning this fall, JTC will continually offer acting classes for students in elementary, middle, and high school. We have sections for both novice and experienced theater students. Always mindful of how to help students progress in their theater skills, our classes will expand over time to include classes on directing and producing a student-acted play. If you are interested in signing your student(s) up for classes, you can find more information on our education page.

How can you help?

We have consistently relied on the net profit of each show to grow. While we have been blessed in that each of our shows have made a profit, the occupancy limitations of COVID-19 limited our margins, and our expenses continue to increase. For example, JTC does not have its own facility and must rent spaces from other companies. Every venue we have worked with has been gracious, but renting facilities still accounts for the majority of our production budget. This is where you can come in! See our donate page for a list of ways you can help from donating to help us cover production and class costs to contributing to our facility rental budget.

Looking Ahead

It is hard to believe two years has already passed for the company. We started in the forest of Camp Highroad in Middleburg, VA with Shakespeare’s endearing comedy As You Like It. We were excited about the future of the company and the chance to bless the community with entertainment and meaningful experiences it did not have before.

Sweet are the uses of adversity, Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, Wears yet a precious jewel in his head; And this our life, exempt from public haunt, Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, Sermons in stones, and good in every thing. I would not change it.”

Neither would we.
