Course Description

Feb. 13 - Apr. 23 Tuesdays, 4:30-6 PM Open to all experience levels. Students are encouraged to take this course more than once, as the curriculum will rotate. Taking the Stage is JTC’s in-depth course for ages 13*-18. The course is designed to incorporate new students** through review of core concepts at the beginning of each class, but will devote the majority of each class to in-depth, challenging work around each semester’s Topic Focus. The Topic Focus will rotate semester by semester to continually challenge returning students with new material. Students will learn through exercises and demonstrations; they will also study scenes which require specific technical skills and prepare monologues for performance, with an emphasis on understanding and communicating the text effectively through advanced stage techniques. Students should expect take-home work and will participate in an end-of-semester showcase during the last class (April 16), open to friends and family. Core concepts for review will include energy, stage presence, characterization, and stage safety. The Fall 2023 Topic Focus (Technical Acting Tools) will include projection, blocking, audience interaction, expressions and reactions, and controlling the space. Students will be equipped with theater vocabulary, and train for practical production aspects such as working with crew and adapting to unexpected stage conditions. * 13-year-olds are welcome in either our Youth Acting courses or our more advanced Taking the Stage course for teens, depending on the maturity and experience of the individual student. We encourage 13-year-olds brand new to theater to take our Youth Acting courses, and students with more exposure to classic texts and on-stage experience to level up into our Taking the Stage course, but we are flexible based on the needs of the student. If you are not sure which class is best for your student, please contact us to determine the best student placement. ** Students completely new to theater are very much welcome! We will send brand new students resources to do some study on their own ahead of class. Tuesdays, 4:30 - 6:00 PM Feb. 13 - Apr. 23
